Position: Cornerback
College: Rutgers
Height: 5-foot-11
Weight: 193
40 time: 4.42
Age: 22
Hometown: Nanuet, N.Y.
Skill set: A tough, physical cornerback, McCourty excels in man and zone coverage. He is also a special teams star, as shown by his seven blocked kicks in his career. His 80 tackles - 7 for a loss - show he isn’t afraid to get dirty. He may not be flashy, but he’s gritty.
Reason to cheer: In 158 passes thrown in his area, McCourty held receivers to 42 catches for 386 yards. He had just one interception, but few passes went his way. For all the Patriots [team stats] struggles against the pass, this is one huge addition. They have some talent there, but when facing Peyton Manning and the rest of the top-flight corners, there can never be too much.
Reason to jeer: McCourty or not, the Pats still have pass-rush issues. They watched potential targets Jared Odrick of Penn State and Sergio Kindle of Texas slide, doing nothing to collect sacks. And this is the second consecutive year they’ve used their top pick on a defensive back.
